Challenge Yourself by Setting Stretch Goals

A couple of months ago, a friend reminded me how important it is to set “stretch goals” for ourselves.  In casual conversation over coffee, she asked me what new goals I was working on to grow myself or my business.  I had to stop and think…….what was I working on or did I intend to work on to stretch myself?   What plans did I have in place to develop myself or my coaching business?  Just like many other leaders, I can get so busy helping my clients/customers that overlook my own development in the process.

I had to admit that I did have a couple of ideas floating around in my mind but I hadn’t committed them to solid goals yet.  And I certainly hadn’t told anyone about them.  Then, I remembered the old saying, “you’re either moving forward or backward, no one is simply standing still.”  The two of us talked about my ideas and by the end of our conversation I set two new “stretch goals;” one goal is to obtain an international coaching certification.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with stretch goals, they are specific goals that will move you beyond where you are in your career or your life and point you to a greater vision.   The goals may invoke some fear because they’re meant to take you to the next level.  However, you want to take them on regardless of the fear because they provide momentum, accelerate your development and give you the sense of accomplishment you need.

What’s the best way to set stretch goals?  Ask yourself the following questions:

What do you want to change, improve or start?  This is your stretch goal.

Why do you want to reach this goal or make the change?  Identify your desired outcome.

How are you going to produce the desired result?  Set measurable action steps that are attainable.

There are a number of keys to keeping stretch goals.  First and foremost, limit yourself to working on 2 or 3 goals.  Then tell a few people what you intend to accomplish.  Ask a trusted co-worker, friend, or mentor to hold your feet to the fire and keep you accountable.  You also might consider working with a coach who will provide both the accountability and encouragement you may need.

Once you set your stretch goals, review them regularly to make sure you’re on track.  Set aside time to evaluate your progress and make adjustments in your action steps if needed.

As you’re moving forward with your stretch goals, remember to enjoy the journey.
