Go ahead... Make someone's day

When was the last time you praised your team, a co-worker or a person you came in contact with who did a good job or provided great customer service?  Many times we are too busy going about our daily routines to stop and acknowledge others.

Recently, I saw a woman who made a presentation at an educational session I attended about four months ago.  The person was asked to pinch hit for her boss and managed to pull together a lively and engaging presentation at the last minute.  I wanted to talk with her after the meeting and let her know how much I enjoyed her part of the session.  Unfortunately, I had to leave immediately after the program and never had a chance to compliment her.

I had good intentions of calling or emailing to let her know I thought she did a great job especially because she managed to do it in a short period of time.  However, this “good intention” never made it to my “to do” list.

Seeing her at the second meeting was my chance to remedy the situation and give her the praise she deserved.  I shared my thoughts with her and apologized for not telling her right after the educational session. She smiled and said, “Thanks, you made my day!”

It’s interesting how a few words of praise, appreciation, or a simple compliment can brighten a person’s day. Most people appreciate the encouragement and recognition.  It’s the emotional fuel that replenishes their spirits.

Leaders need to remember to recognize their employees’ contributions on a regular basis. To make it even more meaningful, think about personalizing the recognition.  A highly predictable, impersonal word of praise is almost meaningless.  Add a little something extra and personally deliver the praise or create a way to make it special for the individual.  Also, unlike my situation, offer the praise in a timely manner.

A CEO I know takes the time out of his schedule every Friday to write personal thank you notes to people who have helped him or to recognize employees for their efforts that week. To most employees, a sincere thank you, whether written or verbal, can be a powerful motivator.

So, I challenge you to go ahead and Make Someone’s Day!
